There are popular guided walks from the Heritage Centre taking in the main landmarks of the town. A ford still takes traffic across the River Sid.
Sidmouth’s park, The Byes, is a delightful riverside walk and quiet sanctuary.
As you meander up the the Byes, taking in the beautiful scenery and parkland you begin to make your way to the pretty neighbouring village of Sidbury. No stroll through the Byes is complete without stopping for one of Devons best cream teas at the famous "Salty Monk" hotel and guesthouse. Located right at the top of the walk, within Sidbury itself the Salty Monk is a beautiful place to stop and take refreshment before comtemplating the stroll back - or indeed a tax ride!!
There are plenty of other fantastic walks around Sidmouth, especially those along the sea front. Why not take a walk along the coast path to Branscombe and Beer. Here younger rocks, the Upper Greensand and Chalk cap the cliffs and the combination has given rise to the spectacular Hooken Landslide. These younger rocks are the source of fine building stones that have been used in the construction of Exeter Cathedral. Beer Quarry Caves offers a fascinating glimpse into the working of the famous Beer Stone.
In the other direction, Stuart Line Cruises run boat trips from Exmouth and this is one of the best ways to marvel at the cliffs. Sidmouth Museum contains information and holds events exploring the World Heritage Site.
The more energetic can always climb the 500 feet high Peak Hill to enjoy the magnificent panorama Sidmouth and the coast far below. In the other direction is the equally commanding Salcombe Hill whilst inland are the green hills of the pretty Sid Valley. Alternatively there is always a gentler stroll around town, through the park and gardens and along the seafront. This is linked by a walkway to the western beach at Jacob’s Ladder.
